Agates from abroad
Agate belongs to quartzite materials and is composed of a mixture of crystalline and finely fibrous quartz - chalcedony and opal. It is characterised by concentric, wavy or horizontal striations. When the quartz mass completely fills the space in the parent rock, we speak of agate. If the striations line a 'peck' and there are quartz crystals (usually amethyst) inside, it is a geode. Horizontal striations are quite common in Brazilian agates. These are the so-called gravity agates, where the gelatinous siliceous mass was not precipitated when following the cavity, but parallel to the then surface determined by the Earth's gravity. Unlike the "hard" Czech specimens, the raw material from Brazil is sometimes dyed because it is porous and able to absorb synthetic dye. As a rule, these are garish and deep pink, green and blue agates, all of which are identical in hue. This makes them distinguishable from natural pieces that have stripes in different tones within a single color.
