Fluorite belongs to the halide mineral group and crystallizes in the cubic crystal system. In nature, it occurs as vein fillings, as crystals and in association with other minerals, such as barite. The most common crystal forms are cubes, octahedra, rhombic dodecahedra (composed of 12 rhombic faces), as well as combinations and twinned forms. Skeletal crystal growth can also occur.
One of fluorite’s characteristic properties is perfect octahedral cleavage. It can be transparent, translucent or opaque. Vein fluorite is often characterized by colorful banding ranging from white, yellow and brown to green, blue, purple and black; colorless specimens also occur, while other colors are rarer. Crystals commonly display a combination of one to three color shades.
