Meteorites
A meteorite is an object from outer space that was partially preserved after passing through the atmosphere and hitting the surface of the Earth. The fall is accompanied by a light effect, known as a "shooting star" or bolide, and a characteristic sound. Such a body passes through the Earth's atmosphere at high speeds, ranging between 11 and 72 km/s. The speed of passage (the lower the speed, the more volume remains), the composition (iron meteorites resist better than stone meteorites) and the angle of penetration into the atmosphere all have an effect on the preservation of the size of the original mass. Meteorites are characterised by surface melting caused by heating in the atmosphere.

Meteorites are divided into rock, rock-iron and iron meteorites.
- Stone chondrites date back to the formation of the solar system. They contain so-called spherical chondrules in a composition consisting of olivine, plagioclase, pyroxene, and often metals and sulfides. These spherical aggregates distinguish them from terrestrial rocks.
- Stone-iron meteorites formed in the crust of asteroids. There was a mixing of olivine and a metallic component of iron and nickel. This mixture is known as Pallasite, and its texture and transparency of yellow-green olivine stand out in incised sheets.
- Iron meteorites (siderites) are an alloy of iron, nickel and trace amounts of other metals. Unlike rock meteorites, they have undergone metamorphosis and represent the cores of asteroids. They contain Widmanstätten patterns, which are formed by varying ratios of the two predominant elements. They are clearly visible when the section is etched with meteorite material.
